About
The Church of the Holy Trinity dates from 1189 and is built on the site of an earlier set of churches dating from the 7th century.
It contains the tombs of four Bishops of Lichfield – two of whom are highly significant. Richard Sampson was Henry VIII’s chaplain and was involved in the divorce proceedings of Catherine of Aragon and the prosecution and execution of Ann Boleyn. Thomas Bentham was the first Bishop appointed by Elizabeth I and also the first married bishop in the Church of England.
The church also houses a number of extremely fine Anglo Saxon carvings, along with Civil War cannonballs.
The church functioned as the de-facto cathedral for over 400 years and has beautiful stonework, fine Stained Glass Windows and exquisite details.
The Churchyard which also dates from the 7th century contains the graves of the ancestors of US President Jimmy Carter and also Arnold Machin, the designer of the iconic Queen Elizabeth II stamp.
