About
A special archive film show from Ray Johnson looking back at the sporting legends of Newcastle under Lyme and Staffordshire. It will look back at Fascinating sportspeople including cricketer Sydney Barnes (1873-1967) who went from playing at Port Hill Club House to batting against the West Indies, and 'fighting flyweight' Kind Tut in the 1930s.
Newcastle's not so nice sporting history began in Medieval times. Bear-baiting, was a popular pastime where a chained bear and dogs were forced to fight one another.
Our more conventional sporting history includes horse racing between 1728 and 1865.
Newcastle Town Football Club, ‘the Castle’, formed in 1964.
And Porthill cricketer Sydney Barnes as one of the greatest bowlers of all time.
