The beautiful Brampton Museum and its grounds, on a lovely sunny day

About

A special talk by Mervyn Edwards looking back at sport and games in Newcastle and North Staffordshire.

Newcastle's not so nice sporting history began in Medieval times. Bear-baiting, was a popular pastime where a chained bear and dogs were forced to fight one another.
Our more conventional sporting history includes horse racing between 1728 and 1865.
Newcastle Town Football Club, 'the Castle', formed in 1964.
And Porthill cricketer Sydney Barnes as one of the greatest bowlers of all time.
