Film show: D-Day to VE Day

About

A special archive film show marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day from Ray Johnson, featuring footage of the 1945 celebratons in Newcastle and North Staffordshire.

About the film
From D-Day - 6th JUNE 1944 - to V.E.DAY - 8th MAY 1945 - Victory in Europe Day

Memories of D-Day from local man Gerard Booth DFM - rear gunner on a Halifax Bomber on the 1000-bomber raid on the eve of D-Day to destroy the giant German guns defending the Normandy beaches. Plus the actions of the STAFFORDSHIRE YEOMANRY in the landings at Sword Beach during June 6th 1944 and advancing to Caen then onwards to Cherbourg and beyond. Churchill visits the Front and we see the advance through France and the liberation of Paris.

Churchill announces the end of the War in Europe on the radio and says "We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing" - and we see archive films of street parties and parades on VE Day across North Staffordshire.

Plus a unique re-creation of an actual Street Party filmed in Castle Street as a project by Ray Johnson for filmmakers in the Stafford Film Festival - with a support crew and 50 children and actors. Filmed on a SATURDAY, workshopped and produced SUNDAY and MONDAY - and shown in Castle Street on the TUESDAY!

Genuine Archive films plus Re-Creations from Staffordshire Film Archive.
