About

Brindley Village- A Legacy of the Great War. Cannock Chase holds many secrets; this village is just one of them.

This guided walk explores the site of the old Military Hospital which opened in 1916 on Brindley Heath and began a fascinating chapter in the history of the area. It treated both soldiers from the large training camps nearby and casualties returning from France.

When it closed, in 1924, its ownership was transferred to the local Colliery Company. They converted the huts and wards into bungalow type accommodation for its workforce. Brindley Village was born. It eventually housed 58 families and had its own School, Church, Working Men’s Club, and football team. It thrived for over 30 years finally closing in 1955.
