Creator of the Fenland black oak 'Table for the Nation', Hamish Low polishing the table at Lichfield Cathedral

About

Join us for a fascinating evening with Hamish Low, founder of The Fenland Black Oak Project, as he shares the extraordinary journey of the Table for the Nation—a breath-taking 13-metre long table crafted from a 5,000-year-old Fenland Black Oak.

Discovered in the Wissington Fens of Norfolk in 2012, this ancient tree—now known as the Jubilee Oak—was unearthed after lying preserved in peat for millennia. Through a challenging process the oak was milled, dried, and transformed by craftsmanship into a sculptural masterpiece that now resides in Lichfield Cathedral until May 2026.

Hamish will guide us through the table's origin, the challenges of working with such rare and delicate timber, and the creative vision that led to its design. Learn how this monumental piece was conceived not only as a work of art, but as a symbol of national heritage, hospitality, and environmental stewardship.
