About

What was like to go to church in England five, six, or seven hundred years ago? What did the service consist of, and how many people were there? Where you sit, and what did you do? The answers involve a surprising mixture of what we still do, with many practices that are quite unfamiliar and exotic to a modern churchgoer.

Nicholas Orme is Emeritus Professor of history at Exeter University. His recent book 'Going to Church in Medieval England' has been a best-seller and was shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize.
