LEEK TEXTILE WEEK
Did you know that medieval embroidery was often humorous, and more than a little risqué? As Tanya Bentham delved into the intricacies of laid and couched work, as well as the lustrous silk threads, she discovered ample material from 13th and 14th century images that appealed to her quirky sense of humour. In fact, her third book on the subject is titled "Naughty Medieval Embroidery."
Tanya's fascination with medieval embroidery began in her teenage years. As she taught herself to replicate the imagery of maidens, knights, and dragons, she infused her work with a modern, humorous twist. In addition to embroidery, Tanya also dyes, spins, and weaves, and her first book "Opus Anglicanum" showcases the medieval embroidery style that has become her signature. And of course, you will be able to find out more about The Leek Embroidery Society’s famous replica of the Bayeux Tapestry, and why the rude parts were removed!
