Nicholson War Memorial Centenary Exhibition

About

Artwork and Memorabilia to celebrate Leek's Nicholson War Memorial Centenary.

One of Leek’s most prominent buildings will mark its centenary on 6 September 2025. The Nicholson War Memorial was commissioned by Leek silk manufacturer Sir Arthur Nicholson and his wife Lady Marianne in memory of their son Lieutenant Basil Lee Nicholson (1890-1915), and plaques commemorate the 535 men and women of Leek and district who fell in the two world wars.

Standing over 90 feet high it is one of the tallest war memorials in the country. The NWM was unveiled on 20 August 1925 and now stands tribute to the fallen of Leek and the surrounding area from both World Wars. It is Grade II listed and is known locally as the Monument.
