Purported to be Ken Loach’s last film, The Old Oak shines a compassionate light on economic distress and the plight of refugees. The Old Oak is a special place. The last pub standing and the only remaining public space in a once thriving mining community. TJ Ballantyne (Dave Turner) the landlord hangs onto The Old Oak by his fingertips, and his predicament is made worse when the pub becomes contested territory after Syrian refugees are placed in the village. TJ meets a curious young Syrian, Yara. Can they find a way for the two communities to understand each other? So unfolds a deeply moving drama about their fragilities and hopes.
