About

LEEK TEXTILE WEEK

The Ply-Split Braiding Workshop, led by master artisan Tejshibhai Dhana Marwada, offers a rare opportunity to explore an ancient craft form deeply rooted in the traditions of northwestern India's nomadic tribal communities. Ply-split braiding is a unique textile construction technique where a plied cord is untwisted to allow another cord to pass through, creating intricate patterns and designs. This craft, practiced by shepherds, cattle, and camel herders, is not only a technique but a rich cultural expression.

During this two-hour workshop, participants will not only learn the hands-on technique of ply-split braiding but also gain insight into its traditional history and contemporary relevance. Tejshibhai Dhana Marwada, a fourth-generation artisan, will share his personal journey and the legacy of his craft. His expertise spans hand spinning, natural dyeing, and weaving, with a particular mastery in kharad weaving, which translates to "carpet" in the Sindhi dialect. Tejshibhai’s remarkable contributions to the craft have earned him the prestigious National Award in 2013, and his work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.

This workshop is a unique opportunity to learn from a living master and to immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of ply-split braiding. Whether you are a seasoned craft practitioner or a curious beginner, this session promises to deepen your appreciation for the intricate art of traditional textile techniques.
